Puppy Training

Bringing home a puppy is a wonderful and exciting experience; it’s also the best time to start their training. The first few weeks are filled with special achievements, development milestones and important bonding time. However, you are likely going to be faced by boisterous and obnoxious behavior almost immediately. As a puppy parent you must be responsible and take a few steps to ensure they mature into a well-behaved dog. We ask that all of our new owners sign up for Spirt Dog Training Online “Ultimate Puppy Bundle” course. Use the link below to sign up well BEFORE your puppy comes home! Below you will also find some very helpful links.

More About AKC Star Program

Vaccinations & Deworming

Vaccinations:

Our puppies receive the vaccine Neopar at 6 weeks of age. Neopar is a vaccine shot that is to protect your puppy from the deadly disease, parvo. Neopar has the highest titer for parvo on the market today.

Our puppies also receive one, Canine DHPP 5-way vaccination from a licensed veterinarian before they leave our care at 8 weeks of age. This protects against:

Canine distemper, adenovirus type 2 (and hepatitis), Kennel Cough, parainfluenza and parvovirus.

Puppies and dogs need 3 booster shots and yearly boosters in order to help protect against deadly diseases. As a responsible breeders we do everything in our power to make sure our puppies leave our care healthy but there is no way to protect a puppy 100%.

Kennel Cough, Rabies Vaccines, heartworm and licensing:

We do not give our puppies a Kennel Cough vaccinations. We believe this should be the discretion of the new owner and given once the puppy arrives home and he/she is about 5 months old. Please take note that when this is given, your puppy can get sick. You must watch your baby very carefully for a runny nose or coughing after he/she is given the shot. Rabies and heartworm treatment should be given by your veterinarian at 4 months of age. Most states require rabies vaccines along with local licensing of your puppy. Check with your veterinarian for your city’s requirements.

Deworming:

Since your puppy was 2 weeks old it has been dewormed every 2 weeks, over a 3 day period with Safeguard dewormer. Your puppy will need to be dewormed once a month until 6 months of age, then once every three months the rest of its life.

Umbilical Hernias in Puppies

Puppies are prone to have umbilical hernias. This happens when there is a tiny bubble that appears close to where the umbilical cord has closed. They are normally very tiny and pose no threat to the health of the puppy. If your puppy shows any signs of a hernia, you will be notified and educated by us and our veterinarian.

Pet Insurance Is A Good Idea!

ASPCA pet insurance is a wonderful organization with very good insurance planes for your puppy. You can visit any vet, specialist or emergency clinic. It is simple to use, and they deposit your reimbursements directly into your bank account. We have used them for years and they have never let us down. Not to mention, they are very affordable, and you can cancel at any time. Pet insurance is always a good idea.

Spay or Neuter?

While spaying or neutering your dog was strongly encouraged for many years, it is now been proven that having a Hysterectomy (for girls) or a Vasectomy (for boys) is a much safer alternative to ensure the long term health and wellbeing of your dog. This should be performed just shortly after their first birthday at 1 year old. By being proactive, you reduce the threat of unplanned litters and back yard litters. It is also in the best interest of your puppy. There are many health benefits including reducing the risk of certain cancers and deadly diseases. In addition, it helps with temperament development. Please do your part and plan ahead!
